Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is based on the science of learning and behavior.  ABA looks at how behaviors work, how behaviors are affected by the environment, and how learning takes place.  The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning.  ABA programs can help increase language and communication skills, improve attention, focus, social skills, memory and academic skills, and decrease problem behaviors.

ABA involves various techniques for understanding and changing behavior.  ABA can be adapted to meet the needs of the unique individuals and can be provided in different settings: including school, home, and/or community.  ABA teaches skills that are useful in daily living and can involve one-to-one or group teaching. Positive reinforcement is one of the main strategies utilized in ABA.  When a behavior is followed by a valued item and social praise, that behavior is likely to be repeated in the future. To determine the function of a behavior (why it is happening), we need to look at the Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence correlation.  Understanding Antecedents (what happens immediately before the behavior) and Consequences (what happens immediately after a behavior) is another major component in ABA.

Applied Behavior Analysis is not a “one size fits all” program.  Each program is written to meet the needs of each individual.  The overall goal of ABA is to assist each individual in becoming independent and successful in short and long term goals.  A qualified and trained behavior analyst (BCBA) completes assessments to determine and customize a plan that incorporates the learner’s skills, needs, interests, preferences, and family situations.  Goals are written to include different skill areas and behavior intervention plans are designed to assist in decreasing unwanted behaviors.  Ongoing data collection, graphing and monitoring of behaviors continues throughout services to determine if services are effective or if changes need to be made.

Still Have Questions?

Common Questions from our Families.

Find quick answers to the most common questions from our families. If you need more help, just reach out — we're here for you.

  • We are an in-network provider with most major insurances, including Indiana Medicaid and MHS providers. We accept most major insurance plans including Medicaid. As a courtesy to our patients, we verify insurance coverage and communicate with you regarding therapy benefits. If your specific health plan is not listed, we will work with you and your insurance carrier to find a solution that best meets your needs.

  • Even if your insurance is In-Network, sometimes the insurance provider requires that the deductible be met before they will cover services. If you have a high deductible plan, we have options to help. Private pay rates, discounts, and payment plans are available. We also accept payment via HRA/HSA accounts.

  • Individual therapy is designed to provide one-on-one, goal-specific therapy based on the specific needs of your child. Session times can range from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your child’s individualized treatment plan.

  • Given the natural tendency of children and adolescents to learn from their peers, group therapy is an ideal venue for developing social skills. Please contact the clinic to inquire about enrollment.

  • 1. If billing insurance for therapy services, a referral from your pediatrician is usually required.
    2. Please provide us with your child’s name and a valid email address. We will send an email to you with a link to complete our electronic intake packet.
    3. Upon receipt of the doctor’s referral and completed intake packet, your child is ready for an appointment.

  • Many children benefit from a comprehensive therapy plan to address their specific needs. Our scheduling staff and therapists work hard to coordinate and collaborate to create the best schedule to fit the needs of the child and his/her family.
